Writing Daily Letters to God: How One Practice Deepened My Faith and Changed My Life

I never planned for this simple habit to change everything. But it did.

Years ago, I stumbled across a book called The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It encouraged readers to write three longhand pages every morning—a practice called “morning pages”—as a way to unlock creativity and connect with self. I began doing it faithfully, pouring my thoughts, fears, and hopes onto the page.

It was healing. But eventually, it started to feel incomplete.

Something inside me longed for more than self-expression. I wasn’t just trying to connect with myself—I was desperately trying to connect with God.

From Morning Pages to Sacred Letters

When I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ, everything shifted. Suddenly, I wasn’t satisfied with just writing about my day. I wanted to write to someone. Someone who loved me. Who was listening. Who was real.

So I began writing daily letters to God.

Some days I wrote to the Father. Other days I wrote to Jesus, my Savior and friend. Sometimes I poured my heart out to the Holy Spirit.

Each letter became a conversation. Each entry felt like sitting across from Someone holy and alive.

A Relationship, Not a Routine

This wasn’t about performing a task or checking a box. It became a relationship—a sacred rhythm where I could:

  • Pour out my pain without judgment
  • Confess things I didn’t dare say out loud
  • Ask questions I didn’t know I had
  • Dream without limit
  • Thank Him for the smallest things

It was like breathing again. Writing letters helped me tune in to His presence, not as a distant God, but as a tender Father who wanted to be close.

When Words Become Worship

Over time, my letters started to feel like worship.

Some entries were long, aching cries:

“God, I feel so lost again. Please help me open my eyes and heart, and see things the way you see, and love the way you love…”

Others were simple bursts of praise:

“Jesus, thank you for this morning. Thank You for the sunshine and beautiful weather and reminding me of your goodness.”

There were days I didn’t feel anything at all, but I wrote anyway. And somehow, even on those dry days, God met me in the lines between the lines.

What I Learned Through Writing to God Daily

1. God Wants to Hear It All

Nothing is too small, too messy, or too repetitive. He delights in our honesty. I stopped censoring myself. I wrote what was real.

2. The Holy Spirit Writes Back

Over time, I would pause while writing and sense words rising within me—answers, encouragement, correction. It was like divine dictation. Not always audible, but always loving.

3. It Built My Trust in God

As I looked back through old letters, I saw how many prayers had been answered. Things I begged God for in tears were quietly, lovingly fulfilled.

4. It Healed My Heart

Writing letters helped me process old wounds, offer forgiveness, and surrender shame. It became a healing space for me to be raw, seen, and safe.

How You Can Start Writing Letters to God

You don’t need to be a writer. You just need to be willing. Here’s how to begin:

A. Set a Sacred Time –  Mornings are powerful, but any consistent time will do. Light a candle, play worship music, sit in stillness.

B. Begin With “Dear God…” – Write to the Father, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. Choose who you need that day.

C. Be Honest, Not Polished – God wants your real voice, not your perfect prose. Say what’s on your heart.

D. Leave Space to Listen – After writing, pause. Listen. If you sense Him speaking, write it down.

E. Keep Your Letters Safe – A special journal or box can hold your sacred correspondence. Revisit them when you need to remember His faithfulness.

Creative Prompts to Deepen the Practice

Here are some prompts to stir your spirit:

  • “Father, today I need help with…”
  • “Jesus, I want to see You…”
  • “Holy Spirit, what do You want to teach me about…”
  • “God, why does my heart still ache over…”
  • “Thank You for the way You showed up in…”

You can also use Scripture as a jumping-off point. Read a verse, then write your response in letter form.

The Power of Writing to All Three Persons of the Trinity

Each part of the Godhead brings a unique relationship:

  • Father God brings protection, identity, and covering.
  • Jesus brings compassion, friendship, and salvation.
  • Holy Spirit brings wisdom, comfort, and inspiration.

Writing to each one deepens your understanding of who God is and how He desires to interact with you.

Testimonies from the Practice

I’ve shared this with others, and they’ve experienced breakthroughs too.

One woman began writing to God after years of silence. Through her letters, she forgave her abusive father and finally slept in peace.

Another friend heard the Holy Spirit speak to her clearly for the first time through her journal. It led her to start a creative business rooted in faith.

These are not just words on a page. They are lifelines of love and healing.

A Journal of Faith, Not Just Feelings

My letters have become more than entries—they are a timeline of testimony.

  • Some pages hold grief.
  • Others hold joy.
  • Many hold answered prayers and dreams I forgot I even had.

They are sacred altars I return to when my faith wavers. They remind me: God is faithful, and He’s still writing my story.

Every letter is an altar. Every page is a prayer. Every word is worship.

And you don’t need fancy language or a perfect life to start. Just a pen, a page, and an open heart.

Dear God…

That’s all it takes.

He’s listening. And He’s ready to write back.
